Family doctor is a persons advisor in health issues. People turn to a family doctor in order to receive treatment, preventive examination, consultation for health improvement as well as other information regarding the health condition of a patient and behaviour in different situations of life related to health.
What does family doctor's practice offer?
- first help in case of simple injuries;
- treatment in case of sickness;
- making and sending for simple examination tests;
- medicine (also to be reimbursed) prescriptions;
- consultations regarding health, care possibilities;
- preventive examinations and vaccination;
- newborn and child care;
- paid services in accordance with the price list.

Working hours of the family doctor's practice:
- planned medical assistance is provided in the place of practice in accordance with prior registration not later than within 5 working days from the day of registration;
- a family doctor has visiting hours both in mornings (between 8.00 to 13.00 o'clock) as well as evenings (between 13.00 to 19.00). Home visits If you are not able to visit the doctor at his or her place of practice or outpatient medical institution due to health condition, then a family doctor will go for home visit.
Home visits of a family doctor are available free of charge to (see all groups of peeople who in Latvia can recieve State-funded health care):
- for children up to the age of 18 years;
- persons of the first disability group;
- patients, who require a long-term lung ventilation;
- patients, who receive palliative care (lying patients with certain diagnosis) and health care at home;
- influenza patients during influenza epidemic;
- if upon the initiative of a doctor a home visit to a patient is performed after the call to Emergency medical service.
A patient contribution in the amount of 2,85 euro for a home visit of a family doctor shall be made by:
- patients older than 80 years;
- patients having influenza during influenza epidemic;
- if upon the initiative of a doctor a home visit to a patient is performed after the call to Emergency medical service.
Home visit of a family doctor for other patients will be a paid service in accordance with a price list approved by a practice of a family doctor.
Doctors on duty
If your health condition worsens during non-working time of the practice of a family doctor and help is required within a competence of a family doctor, doctors on duty are available in Riga and other biggest towns of Latvia. You may turn to doctor on duty for help regardless of the fact, at which family doctor you are registered. You may become acquainted with medical institutions in Latvia, where doctors on duty are available as well as working hours of doctors in the section "Doctors on duty".
To find out whether a doctor is available at your institution who can also provide advice in English, you should contact the institution by phone or email before your visit.
Family doctor's consultative telephone
When a family doctor is not available, you may receive medical advice or consultation on how to behave in case of simple injuries by calling to the family doctor's consultative telephone 66016001. Family doctor's consultative telephone is available from 17.00 to 8.00 o'clock during working days, but during weekends and holidays - round the clock.
